Over several decades, Aegon has established itself as a leading integrated, diversified, international financial services group. In that time, its infrastructure evolved along with it, growing unsustainably complex. Aegon found itself managing legacy architecture while investing in cloud and then multicloud as the result of acquisitions and the varying needs of its business units. "I used to tell the team, it's like we're operating a Baskin-Robbins of infrastructure, which you can imagine quickly becomes costly and doesn't allow us to manage standardization where appropriate," said Glynis Coutee, Head of Infrastructure at Aegon. Aegon needed greater agility, scalability, and faster go-to-market, yet found that operating in a single cloud was not an option. To manage its multicloud environment, it needed an automated solution that could effectively connect the Amazon Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs) and Azure Virtual Networks (VNETs) in its environment and manage encryption – all without adding headcount or complexity. It was clear that building and maintaining such a solution using internal resources was not an option. The Business Backbone: Intelligent Cloud Networking The Aviatrix Cloud Networking Platform delivered Aegon a consistent multicloud operational model with repeatable designs in and across its Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure clouds. Advanced networking and security features enabled Aegon to simplify overlapping IP challenges in any cloud with high-performance encryption, secure network segmentation, and distributed firewalling. Aviatrix Intelligent Cloud Networking also delivers enterprise-class visibility and control to Aegon that native cloud services do not provide, ensuring application availability and performance while establishing a solid foundation for the company's multicloud networking infrastructure. "Aviatrix is allowing us to create the backbone that will help Aegon make money. I think we all know that network connectivity is key, and if we don't stay in the forefront of that network connectivity then we can't help the business achieve its outcomes," said Coutee. Achieving Network Agility and Scalability After deploying Aviatrix, Aegon saw value almost immediately as it was able to improve agility and implement automation. IT can now partner with the company's business units to understand needs and deliver truly impactful outcomes for the customer. Aegon can spin up network tunnels in just 3-4 clicks. What used to take hours to deliver, now takes seconds. Aegon has also increased its ability to scale without significant investment in headcount for multicloud support. Leveraging rich APIs that Aviatrix already had in place, Aegon avoided building much of the automation that it needed to support its connectivity. Aviatrix has also delivered the increased visibility the company needed to inspect traffic and secure its network. "Working with a small team to deliver what we are doing today would not have been possible if we had not implemented Aviatrix. We would have needed to add staff to be able to manage what we're doing today," said Coutee. "The one thing I would say to people that are taking the cloud journey is, for the multicloud approach, don't try to do it yourself. Recognize that there are vendors out there that you can partner with to help you. People need to think of the vendor as a partner, and not just a vendor."
