Architecturel Considerations and Estimation Assumptions
- Centralized Firewall Architecture with Load Balancer in AWS and Azure Deployment is assumed in estimating costs. Transit Gateway is assumed irrespective of the Egress requirement.
- Published Pay-As-You-Go prices are used for comparisons.
Other Assumptions
- 2 Availability Zones per VPC/VNet and 2 Availabiloty Zone of Centralized Firewalls
- Instance Size: T3. Medium for AWS and B2S for Azure
- Gateway Load Balancer: Single Region, Single Firewall Hub
- Firewall to VPC Ratio - 5:1, Aviatrix Gateway to Firewall Instance Ratio - 10:1
Where Can I Find My Gateways and Traffic?
- Login to your AWS Console with your Organization Payer Account.
- Search and go to ‘Billing’ Service.
- On the left menu, click on ‘Bills.’
- In the upper right, select the most recent full month from the dropdown menu.
- Scroll down to “Charges by Service” and put in a filter for “NAT.”
- Add up the total number of “hours” across all regions. Divide by 730 hours in an average month and use that number as the input for “Number of NAT Gateways/Firewalls.”
- Add up the total number of GB across all regions. Use that number as the input for “Estimated Traffic per Month.”
- Login to your Azure Portal with your Billing Account.
- Search and go to ’Cost Management + Billing.”
- On the left menu, click on ‘Invoices’ and click on the invoice for the most recent month.
- At the top of the screen, select ‘Edit Columns’ and ensure that “Units” and “Unit type” are selected as visible.
- Under ‘Search’ type ‘NAT.’
- Find at the Unit type ‘1 NAT Gateway Hour.’ Take the number of ‘Units’ and divide by 730 hours in an average month. Use that number as the input for “Number of NAT Gateways/Firewalls.”
- Find the Unit type ‘1 NAT Gateway GB.’ Input that number for ‘Estimated Traffic per Month.’
- Login to your PAN Console with your Organization Payer Account.
- Search and go to ‘Cost Explorer’ Service.
- On the left menu, click on ‘Cost Explorer’.
- On the right panel ‘Report Parameters’ set the following values:
- Time → Date Range: 1 Year
- Time → Granularity: Monthly
- Group By → Dimension: Usage Type
- Filters → Linked Account: Select All
- Filters → Usage Type Group -> Search “NAT” and Select All
- You should see NAT Gateway usage hours and charges populate.
- (Optional) Click ‘Save to Report Library’ to access this information faster.
